<image:title>ART & LITERATURE - Pause or Poise</image:title>
<image:caption>About this poem and drawing: “Pause or Poise” was inspired by ballerina Bekah Burke’s TikTok video where she balanced en pointe on a wine bottle. In that moment, it sparked my interpretation of a deeper story. The wine bottles symbolize an alcoholic father who tried to destroy his daughter’s passion for ballet, haunted by the tragedy of losing his wife, her mother, during a performance. The bruises, ripped dresses and cracked shoes reflect his attempts to break her but she refuses to surrender. Balancing en pointe atop a fragile bottle, she embodies resilience. One wrong move could shatter everything yet she chooses confidence and elegance. In the end the music box awakens her mother’s memory and she dances a pas de deux with her spirit, transforming pain into beauty. Like Odette she rises graceful, defiant and unbroken. Author’s Description: Jayrine Valdellon, 19, from the Philippines, often writes poems when something captures her attention or stirs her emotions. Writing has always been her way of finding peace, even when her thoughts become complicated. It feels as if the voices in her head flow through her and reach her fingertips, guiding her to write. Poetry allows her to make sense of her feelings and transform them into something meaningful.</image:caption>

<image:title>ART & LITERATURE - Shameful Gaze</image:title>
<image:caption>In Shameful Gaze, the poet confronts the unsettling intersection of self-hatred and the desperate hunger for love. The piece takes the reader through raw, visceral imagery of control, desire, and destruction, unravelling the inner conflict of a soul that both yearns for affection and recoils from its own reflection. With haunting metaphors and stark vulnerability, the poem explores what it means to feel monstrous in one’s own skin whilst still pleading—quietly and shamefully for love.</image:caption>

<image:title>ART & LITERATURE - Cannibal Gourmet - In the poem "Cannibal Gourmet", poet Aster Quinn utilizes the extended metaphor of cannibalism to convey their experiences with CPTSD, childhood abuse, enmeshment, and CSA. By intentionally dehumanizing themselves as a sheep, Quinn defies gender and expectation by transforming the virginal and oft-victimised symbol of the (presumable female) lamb into a masculine ram, reclaiming their victimhood as tools for defense.</image:title>

<image:title>ART & LITERATURE - The Boy Who Breathed Fire</image:title>
<image:caption>Author’s Note: Written to be enjoyed by adults and children, this story speaks about generational trauma and how, even in well-meaning ways, we can pass on our traumas to the innocents around us, the people we care about most. Written in a fantasy world, the story is engaging for children due to its emotional and fantastical theme and setting, and it is reminiscent of the old folk tales that their adults grew up reading as children. This hope is to unite them in understanding how love and courage can start to heal those generational wounds.</image:caption>

<image:title>ART & LITERATURE - Grief is a Privilege - In “Grief is a Privilege,” Zariah Perkins reflects on the loss of her mother and the way grief can serve as both a wound and a gift. The poem honors the pain of loss while also exploring how that pain can be alchemized into resilience, love, and spiritual grounding. With affirmations of healing and strength, the piece embodies her commitment to transforming personal sorrow into a source of light.</image:title>

<image:caption>“Where a Fern Once Grew” is about love that once thrived in a relationship but, as time often does, slowly withered away. Much like an uprooted plant, traces of its existence remain. Love leaves behind its evidence too in our baggage, our demeanor, and the way we love those who come after our exes. This piece reflects on the empty space left behind when one root is pulled up, and the moment before we replant it with something new.</image:caption>

<image:title>ART & LITERATURE - Depression</image:title>
<image:caption>Oh god, where are you When I am in need of you, When my heart aches with sorrow, when it almost seems like my world is crumbling apart. When it all seems so familiar Yet Unfamiliar, when it feels like being shattered into pieces, When the smallest words they say, Pierce my heart. Oh god, Where are you? I seek you. Sometimes, I question myself, “Why do I live?” And I seek the answer, trying to hear, the smallest voice trying, to give me hope, I try, try and try, just to fail - Lost All the negative thoughs, forming like ominous, Black clouds, inside my mind, Eating me up, draining me, Leaving me alone for eternity. Oh god, where are you?</image:caption>

<image:title>ART & LITERATURE - Hope Happens: Q&A with Anaïs DerSimonian, Executive Director of the Yellow Tulip Project - How do you see the Yellow Tulip Project growing or evolving in coming years? We’ve already grown so much since I’ve joined YTP. We’re getting so much great feedback on the photo exhibits and the media and storytelling component of our work. I think we’re going to start doing more in that lane and get involved in institutions like museums and galleries. The goal is to bring mental health to this arts and media scene. I’d also love to grow our team and have different roles for programming and have a greater capacity. We are a tiny organization. We have two full-time people, a couple part-time people and hundreds of volunteers. In order for us to be as accessible as I’d like, we need to grow the organization as well.</image:title>
