Good Riddance

“Good Riddance” is a poem about people begging you to let them in emotionally and then making you feel bad for doing just that.

you begged and you pleaded

pounding on the door

said you felt so defeated

when i wouldn’t open it more

you picked away at the lock

clawed at every bit

i only let you in

because you really insisted it

reluctance filled my brain

i didn’t want you to see

just what it looks like in here

or what living like this could be

don’t normally take visitors

but for you, i allowed

i thought you would understand

i thought it would make you proud

as the door swung open

i watched your expression change

i told you it would be this way

and you’d find it all so strange

now stripped of the privacy

that you wished i would reclaim

i handed you the loaded gun

so go on, take your aim

empty promise fills the air

“i’m always here for you”

stay here now, you wouldn’t dare

what else is there to do?

now you’re just shocked

i can tell by the hush

running back to the door

suddenly you’re in a rush

i blinked and you’re gone

left without a trace

i knew you’d disappoint me

but didn’t know it was a race

the door slamming as you left

is what i can’t un-hear

it was all too heavy for you

you’ve made it abundantly clear

now good riddance

is all i have to say

and gone forever

is where i hope you all stay
