Somewhere Else

Somewhere else

She wants to be free-

But she doesn’t know what freedom is.

If she could, she would hide in the deep far away world of wild wood and water-

But knows she couldn’t stay away forever.

In a cage of her own making-

She aches for greenery and fresh air-

Away from the eyes and minds of world shaped strangers.

Secluded and isolated- but without the fear of being discovered-

Only ghosts of stories past to keep her company.

They sing down to her:

“Child do not lose faith,

You are tired but you are safe and warm and we love you.”

The matches don’t run out and winter’s chill won’t take them to her.

They will have her around but they won’t have her with them in full.

“To be alive is to feel the air” they tell her.

“To feel the air is to be free.”

She wants to be free so she feels the air against her skin.

She sinks into her green sanctuary-

Unable to be sought out any longer.

Author’s Statement: This piece is called “somewhere else”. It came into existence due to my habit of daydreaming. This world is very hard to be in, and I always find myself wanting to be anywhere but here. It’s a reminder to me that I may want to go, but I need to stay and I need to remember why that matters.
